What does Islam say about homosexuality?

Like Christians and Jews, Muslims consider sexual fulfillment within marriage for husband and wife to be the ideal. Sex in marriage is considered a means of communication and pleasure and is not restricted to procreation.

In Islam (as in the majority opinion of all the world's religions) homosexuality is prohibited. In some areas it is treated as a crime punishable under Islamic law, while in others homosexuality is tolerated but homosexuals are still set apart socially. Today a small minority of gay Muslims in some countries are pressing for recognition of their rights within the community.

While homosexuality is forbidden, Muslims are divided over how to respond to gay Muslims. As in other faiths, the more liberal-minded have insisted that Muslims should avoid condemning or rejecting homosexuals, insisting that one can disagree with a person's behavior (public or private) while respecting him or her as an individual. Therefore Muslims should not drive a Muslim who engages in homosexual practices out of the faith.
