The Qurʾan What is This? A current English-language version of the Qur'an, published in 2004
Translation by M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

99. The Earthquake (1 – 8)

A Medinan sura, one of a series of suras that deal with scenes from the Day of Judgement. Compare Suras 81, 82, 101, and others.

In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy

1When the earth is shaken violently in its [last] quaking, 2when the earth throws out its burdens,a This refers to the dead being thrown out of their graves. 3when man cries, ‘What is happening to it?’; 4on that Day, it will tell all 5because your Lord will inspire it [to do so]. 6On that Day, people will come forward in separate groups to be shown their deeds: 7whoever has done an atom's-weight of good will see it, 8but whoever has done an atom's-weight of evil will see that.

Notes:

a This refers to the dead being thrown out of their graves.
