    Jamiatul Ulama-i Islam

Society of Muslim Ulama (JUI) of Pakistan. Origins lie in the Deoband movement in pre-partition India and with the Jamiatul Ulama-i Hind. Originally opposed to British imperialism, it supported the aims and policies of the Indian National Congress and opposed the Muslim League's struggle for an independent Pakistan. Had limited political significance following India's partition in 1947 . Was revived by Mawlana Mufti Mahmud , who opposed President Ayub Khan 's modernizing policies. Regarded as uncompromisingly rigid and insisting on the strict enforcement of traditional Islamic law. Currently divided into two factions, that of Mawlana Fazlur Rahman and that of Sami-ul-Haq . Controls the largest number of madrasas in Pakistan. Associated with the rise of the Taliban version of Islam in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
