Khilafat Movement

The Oxford Dictionary of Islam What is This? Covers the religious, political, and social spheres of global Islam in the modern world

    Khilafat Movement

Agitation on the part of Indian Muslims allied with the Indian nationalist movement, 1919 – 24 . Its purpose was to influence the British government to preserve the spiritual and temporal authority of the Ottoman sultan as caliph of Islam. Leaders and ulama viewed the European attack on the caliph's authority as an attack on Islam and thus a threat to the religious freedom of Muslims under British rule. The failure of the British to support their cause resulted in increased anti-British sentiments among Indian Muslims. The religious focus of the Khilafat movement provided a means of achieving pan-Indian Muslim political solidarity against the British as well as a vehicle of communication between leaders and their potential mass following. The movement led to a Muslim-Hindu alliance in struggling for Indian independence in nonviolent ways.
