    Place of sunrise or east. Geographical term that refers generally to the eastern Arab lands: present-day Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine/Israel, and Iraq. Contrasts with maghreb (“place of sunset” or “west”), a geographical term that refers to the western Islamic empire, the lands of North Africa.
