    Nadwi, Abul Hasan Ali

    (d. 2000 )

A leading religious scholar and Muslim public intellectual of contemporary India and the author of numerous books on history, biography, contemporary Islam, and the Muslim community in India. Nadwi served as rector of the Nadwat al-Ulama in Lucknow, India, an institution of higher Islamic learning founded in the late nineteenth century. During the 1950s and 1960s he stringently attacked Arab nationalism and pan-Arabism as a new jahiliyyah (era of ignorance). A founding member of the Saudi-sponsored Muslim World League (Rabitat al-Alam al-Islami), Nadwi promoted pan-Islamism. He also had a lifelong association with the Tablighi Jamaat.
