    Pacific Region, Islam in

The presence of Islam in the Pacific Basin is the result of postwar immigration, with the majority of immigrants from Turkey, the Levant, Egypt, and the Balkans and a small representation from the Indian subcontinent and Indonesia. The main areas of Muslim population are in Australia and New Zealand, but there are increasing numbers in Japan, Korea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Western Samoa, and Papua New Guinea. Muslim missionary work has been carried out vigorously since the 1970s, resulting in a small but steady stream of local converts. In more developed states, Muslims are supported by administrative structures, including various councils and advisory bodies. No serious political problems face Islam or Muslims in these countries.
