    Tribe. Basis of the type of social organization typical of the premodern world and still dominant in regions where state or other civil organization has not taken effect. Tribal identities are neither exclusive nor fixed, since tribal peoples can demonstrate varied linguistic, ethnic, religious, regional, class, residential, and occupational categories and traits. The Islamic ideal was to overcome tribal loyalties and divisions through membership in a broader Muslim community, which proclaimed the equality of all believers.
