Syrian Islamic activist who organized armed resistance to the Zionist movement and British authorities among predominantly peasant communities. Encouraged peasants to reestablish the basic principles of Islamic faith. Followers continued the campaign after his death and were key figures in the Palestinian uprising of 1936 – 39 . The militant Qassam Brigades of Hamas are named after him.
