French intellectual who, using sophisticated hermeneutics based on contemporary Western critical methodologies, critiques classical Islamic religious, legal, and philosophical traditions. Trained as a medievalist and has written on topics ranging from the twelfth-century Andalusian philosopher Ibn Tufayl to orientalism. Argues in the highly influential Lectures du Coran the importance of distinguishing revelation from the written text and commentaries.
