    ABIM

    Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia or Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement. Founded in 1972 . Major objectives include establishment and propagation of Islamic tenets and principles enshrined in the Quran and Sunnah; spread and defense of the Islamic message, with particular emphasis on its universal dimensions; and mobilization of Muslim youth. Has been critical of the government over issues of corruption, abuse of power, and westernization. Promoted a systematic and comprehensive approach to Islamic propagation that emphasized the relevance and efficacy of Islam in confronting modern problems. Has been the most organized force in Islamic revivalism in Malaysia since the late 1970s. Many ABIM activists have occupied key leadership positions in religious, social, educational, and political arenas, giving it access to the decision-making channels of government and bureaucracy as well as the ability to affect policy directions and the intensification of the Islamic ethos in the country. Most instrumental figure in the party is the former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim .
