    Sipah-i Pasdaran-i Inqilab-i Islami

    Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iranian military force formed after the Islamic revolution of 1979 to purge the existing armed forces of elements considered un-Islamic and a threat to the revolutionary regime. Its role as guardian of the revolution is affirmed in the constitution. Includes mlitary command units for army, air force, and navy, and cabinet-level ministry. Activities have included restoring order to cities and dislodging opposition groups from government positions in the early days of revolution, suppressing ethnic uprisings throughout the country in 1979 , helping Ayatollah Khomeini 's efforts to monopolize power during attacks by leftist mujahidin in 1981 , and actively participating in the Iran-Iraq War.
