Subannu al-Muslimin
West African educational association formed in 1949 . Advocated ideas and practices similar to those of Salafi movements in other countries. Identified by ideological position rather than ethnicity or social class. Founded numerous schools throughout West Africa, reviving interest in locally led, rather than French-style, education. Focused on the teaching of religious studies and the Arabic language. Not politically oriented as a whole, although individual members were politically active in the anti-French resistance. Worked to build a sense of a broader Islamic community. Allied with the Rassemblement Démocratique Africain (RDA) in political matters. Led to the 1957 creation of a cultural association called the Union Culturelle Musulmane.
