Association of Algerian Ulama
Founded in 1931 by Abd al-Hamid ibn Badis and other religious scholars to educate Algerians, promote the Arab-Islamic heritage and national identity of Algeria, revive and reform Islam, and critique Sufi orders and assimilationism. Protested French occupation. Demanded religious freedom, restoration of charitable endowments, and recognition of Arabic as official language.
