    Uwaysi Tariqah

Branch of the Qadiri tariqah founded by Shaykh Umar Uways al-Barawi . Active throughout East Africa, particularly Somalia. Based in Zanzibar. Active in missionary activities in Tanzania, Kenya, and eastern Congo. Ability to transcend tribal loyalties helped it to unite and lead Muslim anti-German resistance in southern Tanganyika during the early part of the colonial era. Known for revivalism and for tolerance of visitation of saints' tombs and requesting intercession with God from deceased holy people. Acceptance of popular practices brought it into conflict with the more fundamentalist Salihi tariqah. Shaykh Uways was assassinated in 1909 .
