    Founder of Hamas as an alternative to the PLO. Declared the goal of restoring Islamic principles and character to Palestinian society. Inspired by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Initially resisted violence, focusing instead on religious education. Later sanctioned violence as a means of eradicating oppression, corruption, and injustice. Became a popular leader in the late 1970s with the general resurgence of political Islam. Worked to reform the Palestinian community from within by combating secularism and developing social service institutions. Turned mosques into centers for education and political organization. Declared that all Palestine is Muslim land and no one has the right to give any portion away.
