    Babur, Zahir al-Din Muhammad

    First Mughal ruler of India (r. 1526 – 30 ). Descended from Timur , he fought most of his life for tribal holdings in Central Asia. Invited to India as a warrior and ally, he occupied Delhi ( 1526 ), initiating the Mughal Dynasty. He wrote poetry in Turkish and authored the first major Muslim autobiography, the Baburnama.
