    Bhashani, Abdul-Hamid

    (d. 1978 )

Legendary leader and activist on behalf of peasants in Bengal and Assam. Received a traditional Islamic education in north India. Joined the freedom struggle through working in the Khilafat movement, the All-India National Congress, and later in the Muslim League to mobilize Muslim peasants in Assam and rural Bengal in support of the demand for the creation of Pakistan. He was jailed several times in British India and in independent Pakistan for his oppositional activities. Blending Islam and socialism, Bhashani became a major figure in Pakistan's left-wing politics in the 1950s and 1960s.
