    Council of Experts (Iran)

    Also known as Assembly of Experts. Elected to advise the Revolutionary Council (dissolved 1980 ) and faqih (chief legal scholar) in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Dominated by clerics. Drafted a constitution that was ratified in 1979 , establishing the authority of clerics in management and guidance of the republic. Made permanent in 1983 to select Khomeini 's successor and oversee the orderly transfer of power.
