    Gulf War

War in 1990 – 91 between Iraq and a U.S.-led coalition acting to force Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait, which it had invaded and occupied in 1990 . The coalition campaign had two phases: extensive bombing of Iraq and then a rapid ground offensive in which the Iraqi military was defeated with heavy casualties. The ceasefire agreement imposed severe economic and military sanctions on Iraq and required Iraq to submit to arms control inspections. Saddam Hussein , Iraq's leader, declared the conflict a jihad and protested against the stationing of non-Muslim troops in Saudi Arabia. In many parts of the Muslim world, there were demonstrations in support of Iraq.
