    Hizbul Muslimin

    Also called Parti Orang Muslimin Malaya. First Islamic party of Malaya. Formed on 17 March 1948 under the auspices of Majlis Agama Tertinggi Malaya (MATA, Malayan Supreme Religious Council). First president was Ustaz Abu Bakar al-Bakir . Party's objective was to win independence from British rule and to create an Islamic state. In June 1948 the British colonial authorities declared a national emergency, and the party's president and six of its leaders were arrested. As a result the party was effectively terminated.
