(d. 1826 )

Last of the traditional Egyptian Muslim historiographers. Witnessed and wrote about the self-destruction of the Mamluk regime in the eighteenth century, the shock of French occupation ( 1798 – 1801 ), and the changes implemented by Muhammad Ali . Viewed Napoleon 's invasion as a reversal of natural order and as a clash between Christianity and Islam. Wrote within the chronicle/biographical dictionary framework used by classical historians.
