Egyptian religious scholar, spiritual guide of al-Jamaah al-Islamiyyah, and radical Islamist. Accused of leading the Egyptian Jihad Organization, which assassinated President Sadat . Encouraged overthrow of the secular state in order to restore Quranic principles. Convicted of inspiring his followers to bomb the World Trade Center in New York City in 1993 .
