Persatuan Islam (Persis)

Islamic Union. Indonesian modernist organization founded in Bandung in 1923 . Prior to World War II, the group opposed nationalism based on the belief that it divided Islam. In 1939 it joined the Supreme Islamic Council of Indonesia, which became a central coordinating body for Islamic affairs. Has a history of support for religious education, promotion of Islamic values, and concern with contemporary political and social questions.
