Abdulmejid, Sultan

(r. 1922 – 24 )

Descendant of Ottoman dynasty installed as caliph by Turkish Grand National Assembly, although not acknowledged as sultan. Appointment led to opposition by supporters of the caliphate on the grounds that the division of spiritual and temporal authority contradicted the Islamic theory of state. Sent into exile in 1924 when the Grand National Assembly abolished caliphate.
