Demokrat Parti. Ruled Turkey 1950 – 60 . Lifted prior ban on call to prayer in Arabic. Permitted radio broadcasts of religious programs. Reintroduced Islamic instruction in schools. Encouraged religious activity as a distraction from the economic downturn of the 1950s. Facilitated the resurgence of Islam, especially at the popular level, in Turkey.
